Beer and football XIV — week two

The game: Dolphins at Patriots
The beer: Jack’s Abby Copper Legend Oktoberfest Lager
The result: Loss, 24–17
The method: Live via Peacock
The record: 0–2
The headline: “Empty my pockets and wreck my day.” – St. John Green, “Canyon Women”

The commentary: Beginning with today’s data skim daily prompt, I’m trying out this “featured image” banner in an effort to… I don’t know. In general, I’m fucking around with a lot of the behind-the-scenes structure of this unread blog in a way that I’m not at all capable. You try being a professional graphic designer and not caring about the appearance of things.

This banner though? I’m digging it enough to have retconned Gene Simmons’s actual diary into week one. We’ll see. Who cares.

Cover of 1968 St. John Green self-titled LPAny hope from last week’s… loss, right? Right. Anyway, I’m feeling worse again, fire-Belichick worse. That’s what I get for filling my pockets with assumptions that obvious referee oversight won’t be corrected in game-altering review for the second week in a row. Drag.

Patriots Unfiltered’s Tamara Brown remarked in the spin-off Patriots Pregame Show that “It’s not enough to get back in it” and she’s so goddamn right that it happened again about five hours later. Then, during the week, one of the regular clowns who calls into the flagship PU rightly observed that “Bill is not a good enough coach to outcoach Bill the GM.” Slight modification: Bill without Tom Brady is not a good enough coach to outcoach Bill the GM. I suppose a lot of mediocre coaches would have done better with Brady, hmm?

L7 performs some more at Brighton Music Hall in 2023
Ivan, Oskar and I regrouped for L7 in Allston Saturday night and, maybe, were not the oldest people there. Bless these “classic rock” shows for getting out by eleven o’clock! L7 long ago entered “It sounds like L7” territory alongside AC/DC and I’m here for it every time, especially when the wind machine remains a reliable set piece in the wake of Hurricane Lee. Pure flowing-hair joy.

I never made it to the Osees on Wednesday though. Two Boston rock shows in five days? At my age? Drag. The setlist wasn’t so different from the first or second time I saw them but still, I would have liked to hear the Intercepted Message material live. (Mac Jones on line one.)

Up next: It’s a must-win game against the snakebitten Jets in which a win will only tie you with the snakebitten Jets. Cheers!
